Kirishima Shrine: Ryoma’s Honeymoon Road
Approximately 1.5 million people visit Kirishima Shrine every year. The 800-year old cedar tree on its grounds is considered sacred, and the “Sazare-ishi” is famous and is mentioned in the Japanese national anthem. There is also a legend of the Kirishima Seven Wonders, and all of these characteristics make the shrine a famous “power spot.”
All of the Kirishima Shrine structures are beautifully lacquered in vermilion, and the main structure in particular has an ornate interior – all the pillars, beams, nageshi (a horizontal piece of timber), etc. are decorated with colored patterns and gold-plated items.
Kirishima Shrine is the first honeymoon location in Japan, which was visited by Ryoma Sakamoto and his wife. Visitors pray for national prosperity, household peace, business prosperity, and traffic safety, etc.
