Sendai Tanabata Matsuri Festival
During the early Edo period, Date Masamune, the first warlord of the Sendai domain, promoted the Tanabata Festival with the aim of encouraging cultural progress among women. This festival has since grown to become one of the largest and most famous Tanabata celebrations in Japan, and is highlighted by colorful Tanabata decorations throughout downtown Sendai and the neighboring shopping arcades.
