Sasa-no-Yuki: The beauty of snow (yuki) upon bamboo leaves (sasa)
The founder, Tamanoya Chubei, invented silken tofu in Kyoto and moved to Edo (present day Tokyo), accompanying Ueno-no-Miya-sama (son of Emperor Gosai). He was the first person to make silken tofu in Edo, and the origin of “Sasa-no-Yuki” is the tofu restaurant he opened in Negishi.
Miya-sama liked the silken tofu very much. He declared that the tofu reminded him of the beauty of snow (yuki) upon bamboo leaves (sasa). After that the restaurant was named “Sasa-no-Yuki.”
Sasa-no-Yuki is well-known as the place where Masaoka Shiki (a haiku and tanka poet) and Natsume Soseki (a novelist) often did their writing, and they are said to have eaten the silken tofu everyday.
