Shoryo Nagashi: The Spirit Boat Procession
The Spirit Boat Procession (Shoryo Nagashi) is a traditional event celebrated in various areas of Nagasaki prefecture, and it is part of the Obon Festival. People who have lost a family member in the last year build a boat (shoryo bune) and decorate it with lanterns, artificial flowers, etc. During the procession, people “float” (carry) the boats which are said to be carrying the spirits of the deceased down the river.
The procession takes place on August 15th every year. Beginning around dusk, the sounds of bells (“chankon chankon”), people’s chants (“doi doi”), and deafening firecrackers fill the town, and this continues late into the evening.
