The origin of the name “Gero” goes back to the Ritsuryo period (mid 7th-10th centuries).  According to Shoku Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan, Continued), in 776 around the Gero area there were two ancient road posts — Kanda-eki of Minonokuni and Banyu-eki of Hidanokuni.  Later another road post, Shimonotomari-eki (下留駅) was added in the middle because the road was too rough and the distance too long between those two posts.  Over the course of time, the kanji 下留 which originally read as Shimonotomari came to be read as Geru, then eventually Gero.
